Church Bulletin Week of December 2, 2007

First Sunday in Advent

BE PREPARED
Be prepared. It's that simple. As this Advent season opens before us, the Lord Jesus summons us to stand ready for his coming. At this time of year much of our attention is focused on being prepared for the details that accompany the holiday season. We purchase gifts; we decorate our homes, inside and out; we prepare foods that we eat only during the holidays; we write and send Christmas cards; we attend holiday concerts; we prepare either to welcome family and friends into our homes or arrange for visits to their homes. We really can't escape the details that make up the season. Perhaps this Advent is a time to attend to all those details with a different spin. As we prepare to celebrate the feast of Christmas, why not be deliberate about acknowledging the presence of the Lord as we go about these tasks? The Lord often comes to us in wonderfully surprising ways. Let us be prepared.

Advent in the Home
The First Week of Advent
Advent is a time to STAY AWAKE. In the darkness of winter we wait for the light to come—the LIGHT of the world—Jesus Christ. We keep our eyes open to that which has already been given to us and anticipate the one to come—Emmanuel.

An Advent Prayer
Lord Jesus,
Master of both the light and the darkness,
send your Holy Spirit
upon our preparations for Christmas.
We who have so much to do,
seek quiet space to hear your voice each day.
We, who are anxious over many things,
look forward to your coming among us.
We, who are blessed in so many ways,
long for the complete joy of your kingdom.
We, whose hearts are heavy,
seek the joy of your presence.
We are your people, walking in darkness,
yet seeking the light.
To you we say, “Come Lord Jesus!” Amen

There is always the danger that we may just do the work for the sake of work. This is where the respect and the love and the devotion come in—that we do it to God, to Christ, and that's why we try to do it as beautifully as possible.

Holy Day of Obligation-Saturday, Dec. 8
celebrate the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Masses are on Friday at 7:00 pm
and Saturday morning at 9:00 am
Through the centuries the Church has become ever more aware that Mary, "full of grace" through God, was redeemed from the moment of her conception. That is what the dogma of the Immaculate Conception confesses, as Pope Pius IX proclaimed in 1854: The most Blessed Virgin Mary was, from the first moment of her conception, by a singular grace and privilege of almighty God and by virtue of the merits of Jesus Christ, Saviour of the human race, preserved immune from all stain of original sin.

THE ADVENT MIX
Advent seems to bring out the best in us, though I couldn't tell you why. It just does, and it seems to happen every year. It may be that Advent is simply another name for God's Spirit, though some folks call it St. Nicholas or even the visions of sugarplums that dance in our heads.

INSIDE THE READINGS
Today the Church begins the new liturgical year, preparing for the birth of Jesus. The reading from the Gospel of Matthew is a reminder that all followers of Christ should also be preparing for the second coming of the Lord, his parousia. The verse immediately before today's reading says of Jesus' return at the end of time, "But of that day and hour no one knows, neither the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father alone" (Matthew 24:36).
There was a serious problem for the early church. Many Christians, following a Jewish concept, expected the return of Christ soon after his ascension into heaven. The sequence was right, but the timing was not. In the very first New Testament writing Saint Paul teaches, "The day of the Lord will come like a thief at night" (1 Thessalonians 5:2). Today's Gospel develops that point at some length.
Another problem was the ridicule that Christians of the first and second century experienced because Christ had not yet returned. In one of his letters to the early church, Peter insists that what may seem to be delay is, in fact, a sign that God "is patient with you, not wishing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance" (2 Peter 3:9).
Matthew insists on preparedness: "You also must be prepared, for at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come" (24:44). The Gospel is stressing the importance for Christians down through the ages of being prepared at all times for the coming of Christ. As we begin Advent and prepare for the birth of Jesus on Christmas Day, we should take the advice of Matthew and always be prepared for the parousia. This Gospel teaches that the best form of preparation is to love God and neighbor truly.

THOUGHTS FOR ACTION
Advent happens when we stop long enough to remember why we do what we do during this month called December, and we think that maybe we should care that way all year long. Some people say that they've found the Christmas spirit. In truth that is when Advent happens, because it's when we find ourselves letting God back into our lives.
