THE HEAVENLY BANQUET
The mountain of the Lord described in today's first reading is a place where there is no more hunger, no more weeping, and no more division of any kind. We need to pause and ponder these images every now and then, especially given the fact that we live in such a fractured world. The responsorial psalm continues to paint a picture of a place where only goodness and kindness flourish. These readings describe the heavenly banquet, to which God calls each of us through baptism and continues to call us throughout our lives. Let us “RSVP” to God's invitation and live our lives consistent with gospel values so that one day we will be welcomed to the table of the kingdom.

On the Lighter Side
A pastor was walking down the street one day when he noticed a very small boy trying to press the doorbell on a house across the street. The doorbell was too high for him to reach. The pastor walked across the street and asked the boy if he needed help. The boy said, “Yes” so the pastor lifted him up so he could press the doorbell. Crouching down to the child's level, the pastor smiled and asks, “Do you need any more help?” The little boy replied, “No thanks, but now we have to run before we get caught!”

Found on the wall in Mother Teresa's home for children in Calcutta:
People are often unreasonable, irrational, and self-centered...Forgive them anyway.
If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives...Be kind anyway.
If you are successful, you will win some unfaithful friends & some genuine enemies...Succeed anyway.
If you are honest and sincere people may deceive you...Be honest and sincere anyway.
What you spend years creating, others could destroy overnight...Create anyway.
If you find serenity and happiness, some may be jealous...Be happy anyway.
Give the best you have, and it will never be enough...Give your best anyway.
In the final analysis, it is between you and God. It was never between you and them anyway.

INSIDE THE READINGS
Today's Gospel centers on a royal feast prepared for the king's son. A banquet is often the symbol for eschatological joy. Isaiah in today's first reading offers a wonderful example of that symbol. "On this mountain the LORD of hosts / will provide for all peoples / a feast of rich food and choice wines, / juicy, rich food and pure, choice wines" (Isaiah 25:6).
The key point of this parable of the royal wedding feast is the response of the invited guests. Two invitations are extended, but some of the invitees refuse to come. Others abuse and even kill the servants. The servants represent the prophets of the Old Testament, who often were persecuted, and also the early Christian missionaries. Later, Jesus predicts, "Behold, I send to you prophets and wise men and scribes; some of them you will kill and crucify" (Matthew 23:34). In today's parable, the king even "burned their city" (22:7). This is a clear reference to the burning of Jerusalem in AD 70 by the Romans.
Frustrated with the reaction of the first group that had been invited (representing the Jewish leaders), the king reaches out to the poor and marginalized. In Luke's version of this parable, the master says, "Bring in here the poor and the crippled, the blind and the lame" (Luke 14:21). Matthew adds the important point that both "bad and good" (Mathew 22:10) were brought into the feast. This prepares for the additional parable about the man without a wedding garment (22:10-14). Jesus insists that coming into the kingdom of heaven is not a guarantee of salvation. All, both bad and good, must respond to the call by a faith-filled life, marked by good deeds.
This parable serves as a warning to Matthew's community and to all Christians down through the ages. Everyone is to appear before the Father with the "wedding garment" of a Christ-like life, marked by love of God and loving concern for all one's neighbors. To be among the few who are chosen (22:14) demands a change of mind and heart, a constant turning to Christ and his values.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
THOUGHTS FOR ACTION
If "many are invited, but few are chosen" (Matthew 22:14), then perhaps we should think about how we get to be chosen and what that requires of us. Proclaiming that we are chosen without doing anything to merit the honor just might get us tossed out of the banquet.
