TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Along with the reform of the Roman Canon and the redrafting of an ancient Roman prayer in Eucharistic Prayer II, two additional prayers were announced in 1969. Eucharistic Prayer III is a fresh composition. Like Eucharistic Prayer II, it has no preface of its own, but the presider chooses from a long menu of possible prefaces to become part of the prayer on a particular occasion. Also, like Eucharistic Prayer II it has a way to insert the name of the deceased in Masses for the dead such as funerals and memorials. The General Instruction of the Roman Missal views Eucharistic Prayer III as the best substitute for Eucharistic Prayer I on Sundays and feasts.
In practice, this prayer is used very often at Sunday Mass, and its texts are familiar to all members of the assembly. In this prayer, notice that the priest extends his hands over the gifts and calls down the Holy Spirit to change them into the Body and Blood of Christ. This call of the Holy Spirit is called the epiclesis, and Eastern Christians consider it to be the consecration. Latin Christians have long considered the “institution narrative” to be the consecration. Partly in response to a deep sensitivity to the East, the reformers took care to structure all our new prayers with a strong epiclesis. The poetry and images of Eucharistic Prayer III are fruitful sources of meditation. Why not take a sentence or two into your private prayer? Rev. James Field, © Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co.

On the Lighter Side
Attending a wedding for the first time, a little girl whispered to her mother, “Why is the bride dressed in white?” “Because white is the color of joy and happiness, and today is the happiest day of her life.” The child thought about this for a moment, then said, “So why is the groom wearing black?”

This outreach, with locations throughout the diocese, takes on many forms, from senior care to family counseling, to care for people with AIDS, to group homes for developmentally disabled adults. In fact, over 60,000 people were assisted by our Catholic Charities agencies last year. These services are made possible with our participation in the Bishop's Annual appeal. THE TILTED SCALES OF LIFE
Life's greatest tragedies would be never to learn what real love is, or how to die for others, or how to forgive or let go or build peace, or where to put things in the hierarchy of life's values. In the end life is not about fairness or getting one's just reward, but about deep gratitude that we have found our heart=s desire.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
INSIDE THE READINGS
Today's parable of the workers in the vineyard is found only in the Gospel of Matthew. Jesus highlights the generosity of God, who is not only just, but also generous, especially to the poor and needy, the marginalized.
The usual day's wage at the time of Jesus was a denarius. In the Old Testament God insisted on the importance of paying the worker each day. "You shall pay him each day's wages before sundown on the day itself, since he is poor and looks forward to them" (Deuteronomy 24:15). The landowner in the parable is just, even with those who were first hired. He pays them what they agreed to.
The problem in the parable arises when all the workers receive the same pay though many have worked longer and harder. The landowner attributes the objections to this arrangement to envy on the part of those hired earliest in the morning. The Greek text speaks of an "evil eye" (Matthew 20:15), representing envy. In the Sermon on the Mount Jesus had said, "If your eye is bad, your whole body will be in darkness" (6:23).
The meaning of the parable is suggested by the verse that precedes today's reading, "But many who are first will be last, and the last will be first" (19:30). One interpretation has the "tax collectors and sinners" (Matthew 9:11) becoming first while the self-righteous become last. Perhaps more to the point, Jesus is saying that everyone benefits from the gifts of God.
In today's first reading God reminds the reader, "For my thoughts are not your thoughts, / nor are your ways my ways" (Isaiah 55:8). In humility the Christian accepts both the justice and the generosity of God. "Are you envious because I am generous?" (Matthew 20:15). Envy on the part of the follower of Jesus is never proper since every gift of God is completely due to God's generosity, not to the individual's ability or activity.
THOUGHTS FOR ACTION
This business of God's extravagance, of God's rain falling on the just as well as the unjust; it's all so strange, so illogical, some might say so insane. Could that be why we pay attention to it at all? Such a different approach to life makes one reconsider what is truly important.
