God's Watchers
In the ancient world watchmen were extremely important people. They kept communities safe, and were there to alert them to any impending danger or attack. Before locks, alarms, and security systems, watchmen were the protectors, the safety measure. So when the Lord charges Ezekiel as a watchman today, it is a weighty charge. So weighty, we learn, that if Ezekiel fails to sound the alarm for those around him and they perish in a state of wickedness, Ezekiel will be held responsible! This profound connection between God's will on earth and in heaven is repeated in today's Gospel, where Jesus instructs us that we are to be the security force, the watchers placed on alert that nowhere in the Body of Christ, the church, will there be any two members of the one Body who are not reconciled. Scripture tells us that Jesus reconciled all things in heaven and on earth through the blood of his cross. But we are given the mission to continue that reconciliation on earth as in heaven through our ceaseless efforts to be, as Paul would write, ambassadors of reconciliation. Let us not get too comfortable thinking that we are responsible only for keeping our own lives from the path of wickedness and disagreement. We are also held accountable for the lives of the members of Christ's body around us. (c) Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co.

ADULT CHOIR
The Adult Choir of Immaculate Conception Church will resume practice on Thursday, September 11 from 7:30-9:00 P.M. Service in our Parish Ministries has taken on new momentum; why not elect to participate in one that is tuneful, social, intrinsic to our liturgy, and which bestows spiritual inspiration in its very action! We hope to welcome new participants this season into our friendly group. Though you may often see faces and hear voices you recognize from year to year, you undoubtedly notice newcomers as well. Our group is open and inviting; no special skill or experience is required, as each Singer moves within his own comfort level. What is required is the ability to consistently attend Thursday night rehearsals. You may even find yourself anticipating your "night out" all week long. Will this be your year to try something "new"? Please come to our first practice on the 11th and see if you and Adult Choir are a "good fit"! We warmly extend an invitation to sing with us. Why not say "Yes" and join in the song!

On the Lighter Side
A Sunday school teacher was teaching how God created everything, including human beings. One little boy was especially intent when they were told how Eve was created out of one of Adam's ribs. Later that week his mother noticed him lying down as though he were ill, and asked, “What is the matter?”. He quickly responded, “I have a pain in my side. I think I'm going to have a wife.”

Letter of Thanks:
“Dear Fr. Bogie,
We would like to extend our sincere appreciation to you and your parishioners for the food collection donated to our Food Pantry for the months of July and August. Ending hunger world-wide is one of the most critical challenges that humanity faces today. Ending it locally, however, is something we can do, one donation at a time. Thank you for helping the Partnership for Social Services achieving this mission in meeting the needs of those who are less fortunate in our community.
Sincerely,
Sr. Thomasina Gebhard”

A LISTENING AND COMPASSIONATE CHURCH
Whenever the Church rummages about in a pluralism of visions and theologies as we do today, what should be bound and what should be loosed is not always so obvious; or if it is, there is always someone to disagree.

INSIDE THE READINGS
Chapter 18 of Matthew's Gospel provides the fourth major discourse of Jesus, the community discourse. Jesus first insists that a childlike attitude is necessary for greatness in his kingdom (18:1C5). He also teaches the terrible fate of those who scandalize the "little ones" in the community (18:6—14).
In today's Gospel (Matthew 18:15—20) Jesus gives instructions on how the local community should deal with a member who sins. The whole purpose of the steps that he outlines is to win the sinner back from sinful ways by true repentance. The community must reflect the merciful love of Christ. If the intervention of one person does not succeed, then two or three witnesses must try to bring the person back into the fold.
If those steps fail, the sinner is to be reported to the church (18:17). Here church refers to the local church, the local community. Resistance to the church can lead to excommunication. Jesus gives the community the right to excommunicate, to bind and to loose, a right that shall be ratified by God (18:18). One who resists the church is to be treated as "a Gentile or a tax collector" (18:17). This standard phrase refers to those who were by their way of life outside the Jewish community and now the Christian community. Christ and the early church certainly worked with these two groups whenever there was faith and repentance. Matthew, a tax collector himself, is a perfect example (9:9—13).
Excommunication was not vindictive, but rather a strong measure with a loving purpose, namely to bring the sinner to his or her senses and to repentance. Paul encourages the kindness of Jesus in dealing with sinners. "Even if a person is caught in some transgression, you who are spiritual should correct that one in a gentle spirit, looking to yourself, so that you also may not be tempted" (Galatians 6:1).
Jesus also promises to be "in the midst of them" (Matthew 18:20), even when only two or three community members pray together.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
THOUGHTS FOR ACTION
As disciples of Jesus we must seek the wisdom of all sides and strive to address the needs of all sides and love the people of all sides. And if we gather in prayer as we seek to build the common wisdom, then Christ has promised to be in our midst.
