BE A ROCK
Peter's history as a follower or friend of Jesus is a bit spotty. It might be natural to wonder if Jesus, in giving him the keys to the kingdom, didn't feel a bit like a parent giving a teenager the keys to the family car. But it was at the moment when God's power and presence broke through everything else to raise up Peter's great profession of faith in Christ as Messiah that Jesus chose to establish the bond between the loving, forgiving mercy of heaven and our vocation to be witnesses of that love, mercy, and forgiveness on earth.
Like any parent, Jesus no doubt foresaw the failings, the irresponsible maneuvers or impaired senses, the collisions that the church would be headed for. But, most importantly, he also saw us at that moment as God prefers to see us: capable of manifesting great faith, with a willingness to remain at the feet of Christ to understand what it truly means to be Messiah and Christ. As the letter to the Romans points out to us today, we have not known the mind or the wisdom of God, but God knows us and still chooses to manifest the reign of justice, joy, beauty, and peace through us. Let this be our vocation. Let us always strive to be solid ground on which the church of Jesus Christ can be founded and on which it can continue to be built.

Saint Monica - August 27
Monica, the patron saint of mothers because of her tireless prayers for the conversion of her wayward son, Augustine (who was converted after a wild life) and by abused women due to the harsh life she lived with her own abusive husband. Monica was married young to a government official, Patricius, who was not a Christian, but through Monica's prayer he was converted upon his death bed. He was a bad tempered man and Monica, though she bore her burdens patiently, prayed for his conversion. Monica was drawn to drinking and when discovered by a maid was shamed into giving up her drinking habit. She struggled and prayed for God to give her strength to overcome her problem. For this reason Monica is the patron saint of alcoholics. Her feast is celebrated on 27 August, the day before that of her son, Augustine. Information provided by Women for Faith & Family Internet Source

Mission: That the answer of the entire people of God to the common calling to holiness and mission may be promoted and fostered by means of careful discernment of charisms and constant commitment to spiritual and cultural formation.

IN SEARCH OF ROCKS
The will of God is not always easy to discern. If there is any comment that people frequently utter about their faith, it is that they wish they knew what God wanted them to do with some aspect of their life.

INSIDE THE READINGS
All three Synoptic Gospels (Matthew, Mark, and Luke) contain the confession of Peter that Jesus is the Messiah. But in today's Gospel Matthew makes significant additions to the other Synoptics. He adds Jeremiah to the list of persons that popular opinion identified with Jesus.
More importantly, Matthew adds reflections concerning Jesus' reaction to Peter's confession, "You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God" (Matthew 16:16). Jesus blesses Simon son of Jonah, stressing that flesh and blood, human nature in its weakness, had not revealed this knowledge, but the heavenly Father. In Aramaic the words of Jesus that followed would have been, "You are Rock, and upon this rock I will build my church" (16:18). Change of name can indicate one's role in salvation history. Being the rock, the church's foundation, is Peter's key role in the kingdom of heaven.
In the Old Testament it is God who is referred to as the Rock. "LORD, my rock, my fortress, my deliverer" (Psalm 18:3). As God is the source of support for the Israelites, Peter will be the strength for the church, the future followers of Jesus. The "gates of the netherworld" (16:18), symbolizing the power of death and the forces of evil, cannot prevail against the church of Christ.
In today's first reading from Isaiah, Eliakim is given "the key of the House of David" (Isaiah 22:22) with authority to open or to shut. Peter alone receives the keys of the kingdom from Jesus as a symbol of universal power. Peter is also able to bind and to loose. This formula can have various meanings. Here it can be understood as the power to teach with authority, to forgive or retain sins, to admit or excommunicate members of the church.
Peter receives the keys of the kingdom and is the foundation of the church. This suggests that while the church is not identical with the kingdom, it is the kingdom's best expression.
