FRUIT OF THE WORD
The seed is the word of God. The agricultural metaphors in all of today's readings give richness to the message that the word of God, cultivated in our hearts, bears much fruit in our lives. Creation itself awaits the redemption of all, even as our bodies await the resurrection. Just as we will rejoice in the fulfillment of God's word, so will all of creation sing for joy in the Reign of God. The word of God is effective and holy; it brings about exactly what it says. It is not futile or empty, but rich in meaning for those who hear and are healed. Those who hear the word of God and keep it will, with all creation, bear much fruit and sing for joy.

Sow everywhere the good seed given to you.
Sow in good ground, sow in sand,
Sow among the stones, sow on the road,
Sow among the weeds.
Perhaps some of these seeds will open up and grow and bring forth fruit, even if not at once. Seraphim of Sarov

On the Lighter Side
A mother was teaching her 3yr old the Lord's Prayer. Each evening she repeated it after her mother. One night she said she was ready to solo. The mother listened with pride as she carefully enunciated each word, right up to the end of the prayer. “Lead us not into temptation,” she prayed, “but deliver us some e-mail, Amen.”

A FIELD OF MIXED DREAMS
It would be much simpler if each of us had only one heart's passion to discern, one treasure by which to live, one sort of soil from which sprang whatever fruit our lives bear. But there are many, and their yields are wildly unpredictable.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
INSIDE THE READINGS
The third major discourse of Jesus in the Gospel of Matthew is usually called "the day of parables." In chapter 13 Matthew presents seven parables concerning the kingdom of heaven. Since Matthew's community is mostly Jewish Christian, he uses "kingdom of heaven" rather than "kingdom of God." This shows respect for the great Jewish reverence for the sacred name "Yahweh."
The parables of Jesus are essentially stories based on true-to-life situations. They offer a challenge to the listeners to find a deeper meaning in each teaching about the kingdom. Today's parable of the sower makes clear that God offers the kingdom to all, the seed is scattered throughout the area! When the seed, the word of God, finds good soil, there is an incredible harvest, "a hundred or sixty or thirtyfold" (Matthew 13:8). The early activity of the disciples who spread the gospel so far and wide in such a short time certainly reflects that wonderful harvest.
Unfortunately, the seed does not always find good soil. Both the prophet Isaiah whom Matthew quotes (13:14C15), and Jesus realize that there will be hardening of hearts. There will be refusal to search out the meaning of the parables or to accept the meaning with understanding and faith. The obstacles to understanding are the intervention of the devil (seed on the path), lack of adequate commitment (seed on rocky ground), and too much concern about this world and its wealth (seed among thorns). But both Jesus and Isaiah truly want all, with God's help, to "understand with their hearts and be converted" (Matthew 13:15).
Today's first reading (Isaiah 55:10C11) is a magnificent tribute to the effectiveness of God's word when a person is ready to be "good soil." The prophet tells how the rain and snow give "seed to the one who sows / and bread to the one who eats" (55:10). God then adds, "So shall my word be . . . [it] shall do my will, / achieving the end for which I sent it" (55:11). The Church applies this concept of "word" to the gospel and especially to Jesus, the Word of God. © Copyright, J. S.
