Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time
HOPE AND FORGIVENESS
There were some interesting conceptions of sin prevalent in the time of the Hebrew scriptures. There was the belief that God punished sin immediately. Those who suffered disease or misfortune were, therefore, sinners getting their due from the Almighty.
Today's first reading hints at another kind of God. When David admits his sin, Nathan declares, “The Lord on his part has forgiven your sin” (2 Samuel 12:13b). Here was not a vengeful God but a merciful God. What good news that must have been to David and those who, like him, could be honest enough to admit their sinfulness!
Jesus is the good news of God's mercy and forgiveness incarnate. Without Jesus, perhaps the good news would have been too good to believe, too difficult to imagine. But there he is in today's Gospel, the God-man, forgiving a sinner and declaring that she is forgiven because of her great love.
There is hope, then, for the rest of us sinners, if only we love enough! © Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co.

THE MYSTERY OF MERCY
Life is mysterious. It's been observed that the people we get angry at the most are also the people we love the most. Somehow, if we are fortunate, out of that mélange of mixed emotions and conflicting dynamics we learn how to give and receive love. Still, we don't always understand how. Today's readings present images of our God's forgiveness that Jesus came to proclaim, and so our hearts are moved to love.

INSIDE THE READINGS
The Gospel of Luke has been called the Gospel of Women. Today's Gospel reading provides strong reasons for that title. In two separate incidents women play a key role. Luke 7:36-50 relates the encounter of Jesus with a sinful woman. He is the guest of a Pharisee named Simon, who had not shown Jesus the normal gestures of respect for a guest, namely a kiss, washing the feet, and anointing the head with oil.
The woman of the story appears and performs all these gestures with great love. She "began to bathe his feet with her tears. Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them, and anointed them with the ointment" (Luke 7:38).
The Pharisee sees Jesus as a teacher and suspects that he may be a prophet. But a true prophet would know that the woman is a sinner. Jesus responds by showing that he knows exactly who the woman is and also knows the very thoughts of his host. He then teaches a great lesson on love and forgiveness. The woman's signs of love show that she is a woman of faith, who realizes that God has forgiven her. She sees Jesus as God's agent and expresses her deep gratitude. The self-righteous Simon fails to realize his need for repentance and forgiveness.
The second part of today's Gospel (Luke 8:1-3) introduces the women from Galilee who accompany Jesus as he preaches "the good news of the kingdom of God" (8:1). Having been healed by Jesus, they will be his faithful followers, supporting him and the Twelve with their own resources. Jesus is showing his openness to women despite the contrary prevailing attitudes of that time. They will go with their Lord to Jerusalem and stand beneath the cross of Jesus (23:49) and will be the first to hear of the resurrection (24:9-11).

THOUGHTS FOR ACTION
The nudge to forgive finds itself felt in many nooks and crannies of our lives. Sometimes it is very obvious, but more often it means continuing to care about a person in spite of our feelings. It can be quite personal, but it can also be about issues and events in our society and community.

FAMILY PERSEPECTIVE
In today's gospel, compassion, discussion, affection, forgiveness, repentance, listening, story-telling and correction all happened during the meal at the Pharisee's house. When our hearts, minds and body have been fed, we leave the meal “in peace”. Meals can be more than self-absorbed eating.
