LABORERS NEEDED
Today's scriptures employ mixed metaphors—images of sheep and shepherds, priests and people, harvest and laborers—all of which intermingle to create a web of meaning on which we have based our understanding of Christian vocations. Above all, these images help us see Christian vocations as an extension and expression of Jesus' own ministry in the world. They lend themselves especially well to a reflection on the vocation to ordained priesthood. The scriptures for today help us understand the role of the ordained in the life of the Church. They also encourage us to pray for an increase in the number of candidates for priestly ordination, for “the harvest is abundant but the laborers are few” (Matthew 9:37). © Copyright, J. S. Prayer for Vocations
Lord of the harvest, your word finds a home in our hearts, calls us into community and invites us to generous service of the human family. Bless with courage and spirit your priestly people, called to full participation in the one Body of Christ. May many choose to respond in public service to your call offered in
Jesus' name. Amen Cardinal Joseph L. Bernardin

FATHER'S DAY BLESSING
God our Father, in your wisdom and love you made all things.
Bless these men, that they may be strengthened as Christian fathers.

A Father's Day Tribute to our Priests
"The priest is someone who, despite the passing of years, continues to radiate youthfulness, spreading it almost contagiously among those he meets along the way. His secret lies in his passion for Christ... "If he is able to offer himself as a gift, placing himself at the service of anyone in need, his life takes on its true meaning." Pope John Paul II
Let us all take a moment to recognize the faithful and true service of our dedicated priests at Immaculate Conception Parish.
Happy Father's Day

Flag Day—June 14th
As the nation observes Flag Day on the 14th of June, give thanks and praise for the great pride our nation derives from our flag.
I Am the Flag by Ruth Apperson Rous
I am the flag of the United States of America...I represent these eternal principles: liberty, justice, and humanity...I embody American freedom: freedom of speech, religion, assembly, the press, and the sanctity of the home...Dedicate your lives to those principles for which I stand: “One nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”...God grant that I may spend eternity in my “land of the free and home of the brave” and that I shall ever be known as “Old Glory,” the flag of the United States of America

A Family Perspective
There are many “troubled and abandoned” children needing guidance. They are “sheep without a shepherd.” Today on Father's Day, let our “hearts be moved to pity for these children.” Jesus reminds all men, “the harvest is abundant but the laborers are few. Without cost you received, without cost you must give. Go to the lost sheep.” Bud Ozar

COMPASSIONATE TRUTH
We tend to know well the ones with whom we live, both their strengths and their weaknesses, and they know us, too. We're less able to hoodwink the family member who seeks to keep us on the straight and narrow. Among our own we are more likely to risk honesty.

INSIDE THE READINGS
The Gospel of Matthew presents five major discourses of Jesus. Today's Gospel contains the beginning of the second discourse, the Missionary Discourse. By way of preparation Matthew describes the need for missionary activity. Jesus has compassion for the crowds. They are "troubled and abandoned, like sheep without a shepherd" (Matthew 9:36).
The need for missionary activity is also seen in Jesus' request for prayers for more laborers, for the "harvest is abundant, but the laborers are few" (9:37). Matthew then names the twelve apostles. Only here are they referred to as apostles in this Gospel. Elsewhere Matthew calls them disciples or the Twelve. There are three other lists of the apostles: Mark 3:6C19, Luke 6:13C16, and Acts of the Apostles 1:13. The lists are essentially the same. However, Matthew highlights the importance of Peter by noting that he is "first."
The number twelve is significant; it indicates that Jesus intends to restore the twelve tribes in bringing about a restored Israel. The Twelve are to go "to the lost sheep of the house of Israel" (Matthew 10:6). Jesus also limited his activity for the most part to his own people. Only after the saving events of his death and resurrection did Jesus instruct his disciples to "make disciples of all nations" (28:19)
The choice of the Twelve together with the Missionary Discourse that follows (10:5C42) teaches that Christ intends to establish a church. The apostles and their successors will provide continuity with the mission of Jesus. Both John the Baptist (3:2) and Jesus (4:17) began their public ministry by proclaiming, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand." The apostles also are to proclaim, "The kingdom of heaven is at hand" (10:7). Their acts of healing will also show continuity with the power of Christ.
