 ADMITTING OUR NEED FOR GOD
As often as we hear the message of today's scriptures, we seem to be able to resist it. The readings invite us, once again, to rely completely and utterly on God's love and mercy in our lives. And, once again, we continue to find ways around that invitation. It's for other people, not us. It's for tomorrow, not today. We can make it on our own talents, goodness, money, hard work, or wisdom. Yet, today's scriptures call our bluff. They invite us to admit our need for God and put our lives in God's hands. We who sit comfortably and smugly at the Lord's Table are beckoned, once again, to follow Jesus in faith and gratitude and love. © Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co.

The Gospel Mass is Coming! Let the Church Be Filled with the Spirit!
It's the kind of music that speaks to our hearts, it's filled with joy and singing praises to the Lord. It's Gospel Music and it's coming to Immaculate Conception Parish. Join us at our Annual Gospel Mass on June 15th at the 12:00 service. Watch out for spontaneous hand-clapping, foot tapping, and movement in the pews. Be prepared to be filled with the Holy Spirit. The Spirit manifests itself in different ways...and in this case through lively, spirited, music for and from the soul. Catholics have begun to realize the benefits of a truly indigenous form of spiritual expression for its congregations. Special thanks go to Mrs. Rosanne Huttman and the Adult Choir of Immaculate Conception for their dedication and efforts to provide for us music that feeds our hearts and souls. The Gospel Mass will prove to be a Spiritual Feast! As always, all are welcome; invite your friends and family to share in this wonderful celebration.

INSIDE THE READINGS
In today's Gospel Jesus invites Matthew, a tax collector, to become his disciple. He gets an immediate response: "[Matthew] got up and followed him" (Matthew 9:9). In the popular mind tax collectors were regularly identified with sinners (9:11). By the nature of their occupation tax collectors collaborated with Rome and were often accused of using the tax system to extort money. Yet Jesus' call to Matthew is a sign that everyone will be invited into the kingdom.
Jesus takes part in a meal with Matthew and many other tax collectors and sinners. The Pharisees are scandalized. Sharing in such a meal, a sign of friendship, could cause ritual impurity. In view of Jesus' action, the Pharisees confront his disciples: "Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?" (9:11) They refer to Jesus as "your teacher," for clearly they do not accept him as their teacher.
Having heard the question posed by the Pharisees, Jesus responds himself. His answer provides important teaching about the purpose of his ministry: "1 did not come to call the righteous but sinners" (9:13). His mission is to the sinners who recognize the need for God's help. Today's first reading is from Hosea, the prophet of God's loving mercy. Jesus quotes the final verse, "I desire mercy, not sacrifice" (Matthew 9:13; see Hosea 6:6). The Son of God is teaching that mercy means more to God than ritual sacrifices.
Both God and the Son will show mercy to sinners. The purpose of Christ's becoming human was to save all from their sins. The very name "Jesus" means "savior." At the Last Supper he makes his mission abundantly clear. "This is my blood of the covenant, which will be shed on behalf of many for the forgiveness of sins" (Matthew 26:28). In the Semitic language the word "many" often means "all," as it does here. Jesus will die on the cross to save all sinners. But since God respects free will, the self-righteous are unfortunately excluding themselves from forgiveness, from God's kingdom.
