This Sunday is Trinity Sunday
The first Sunday after Pentecost is The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity. The doctrine of the Trinity is central to Christian faith. It, like other articles in the Creed, is a dogma, a core church teaching; no Christian doctrine is more central than that of the Blessed Trinity. The closing words of Matthew's gospel strongly attest to the Blessed Trinity. Before ascending to heaven, Jesus said; “Go, therefore, make disciples of all nations; baptize them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit” (Mt 28:19) Belief in the Trinity finds its roots in the first Christians' experience of Jesus. Guided by the Holy Spirit they discovered in his life, death, and resurrection the mystery of one God who exists in a relationship of three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. St. Paul shared this early belief when he ended a letter to the Corinthians with the following blessing:

History of the Anointing of the Sick
During Jesus' public ministry, he told his disciples to do as he did in caring for the sick. Away from Jesus for the first time in their mission to neighboring towns and villages, they met sick people. The disciples used signs to show they prayed for healing. A sign used in prayers for healing was in placing one's hands over the sick person. Olive oil was important in the culture not just as a food item but as well for its medicinal value. So the disciples combined the two. They placed their hands over sick persons and anointed them with olive oil, and discovered that they shared Jesus' gift of healing. (Luke 10) This continued after Jesus' resurrection. The early Christian Church prayed for its sick members. Oil was blessed by the elders and used in prayers for healing.
Please join us today, Sunday May 18th, at the 12:00 Mass as we celebrate, together, a Healing Mass for the Anointing of the Sick. All are welcome

GOD'S GREAT LOVE
In moments of quiet we're likely to remember that God loves us, indeed loves us so much that once God even sent Jesus into this world to save us. Still, it's good to remember that the noisy moments, too, are part of life, and God is present in them as well.

INSIDE THE READINGS
The opening of today's Gospel is one of the best-known Bible texts. "God so loved the world that he gave his only Son" (John 3:16). The Greek text is much stronger than the English translation. To paraphrase the original, "God had such a strong love for all persons that as a result he willingly sacrificed his only Son on the cross." The verb "to give" in the Bible often means, "to sacrifice." In the words of consecration at the Last Supper, for example, Jesus says, "This is my body, which will be given for you" (Luke 22:19). In the letter to Titus Paul speaks of "our Savior Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to deliver us from all lawlessness" (Titus 2:13-14).
The phrase "his only Son" can remind the reader of Isaac. God asks Abraham to take Isaac, "your only one," (Genesis 22:2) and sacrifice him. God intervenes to save Isaac (22:12). But God does not intervene in the case of Jesus despite his prayer in Gethsemane, "My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me." However, Jesus adds to his prayer, "yet, not as I will, but as you will" (Matthew 26:39). The Father permits his Son to go to the cross "so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life" (John 3:16).
John often speaks in terms of realized eschatology, the doctrine of the last things. The Gospel insists that this final condition is already realized in this life as we respond to Jesus. There is condemnation for those who do not believe, but salvation for those who do believe "in the name of the only Son of God" (3:18). Fortunately, as long as the non-believer is still alive, he or she can become a believer and find salvation.
