Church Bulletin Week of March 30, 2008

Divine Mercy Sunday

A SEASON OF JOY
"They devoted themselves to the teaching of the apostles and to the communal life, to the breaking of bread and to the prayers" (Acts 2:42). This first line of today's first reading sets the tone as this fifty-day celebration of Easter opens before us. Today we listen to the teachings of three apostles--Luke, Peter, and John--who remind us that even though we have not seen Christ, we nonetheless are filled with joy as we place our belief in his saving death and resurrection. Each week during the Easter season we will gather as a community of faith to find strength and support from our God and from one another. Each week we will gather to break bread and offer the great prayer of thanksgiving, actions that will manifest the very presence of the risen Christ in our midst. Let us be open to the wonders of this season of joy.

The Annunciation of the Lord
This feast is very important in the defense of the life of unborn children. Even with small children, this is a good day to begin teaching about the high value God places on human life. He loved us so much that he became one of us, took on our human nature and became an innocent, completely dependent infant.

CATCHING FAITH
A lot of folks would say that you can be a believer on your own, but I'd disagree with them. You can know about God on your own, but believing is a different thing. It gets into your heart as well as your mind, and it settles in and starts to affect the way you talk and act and get along. That kind of believing you catch from others.

INSIDE THE READINGS
"Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ" is the opening line of today's second reading from the First Letter of Peter (1 Peter 1:3). Here and frequently throughout the letter the author will use expressions from the Old Testament. Psalm 68:20, for example, reads, "Blessed be the Lord day by day, God, our salvation, who carries us."
More important is Peter's reason for blessing God, for praising God. He cites the two great attributes of God in the Hebrew scriptures, loving mercy and fidelity (hesed wemeth). Peter reminds the reader that the great mercy of God makes the baptismal rebirth to a living hope possible. All these graces are available to the Christian because of the resurrection of Jesus (1 Peter 1:3). The fidelity of God preserves an inheritance that will make possible salvation for all, a salvation "that is ready to be revealed in the final time" (1:5).
The Christian is strongly encouraged to rejoice because of the manifestations of God's great loving mercy, beginning with the rebirth of baptism. This joy should be a part of the life of a disciple of Jesus even though there may be suffering "through various trials" (1:6). For the recipients of Peter's letter the sufferings were mainly the attitudes of non-Christians toward the followers of Jesus, involving social and economic hardships. Again, to indicate that even suffering can be helpful, can purify the followers of Christ, there is reference to the Old Testament: "As gold in the furnace, he proved them" (Wisdom 3:6). Christians are to have hope and to rejoice even in the face of hardship, which can make them more Christ-like as they share in the sufferings of their Lord.
Peter also puts great stress on the personal relationship of his readers with Jesus. They are praised for loving Christ, for believing in him even though they have not seen him. These Christians do it all with "an indescribable and glorious joy" (1:8).

THOUGHTS FOR ACTION
It's been said that it takes a village to raise a child. I'd rather say it takes a community of faith to raise a believer. It's how we come to faith and stay in faith.
