Second Sunday of Lent
WE ARE TO BE TRANSFORMED
Today's showing forth of God's glory is filled with a light that astonishes and reveals. Jesus transfigured on Mount Tabor energizes even the sleepy apostles, who see but cannot get hold of it. They can be forgiven for not apprehending the full meaning of this extraordinary vision of a transfigured Jesus with Elijah and Moses. The whole of the Law and prophets is summed up here on this mountain.
The transfiguration on Mount Tabor is handed over to us this Sunday. As Paul reminds us, it is we who are to be transformed. The light and life of the Resurrection are set forth here so we do not lose heart and fall entirely asleep. This Sunday looks to Easter. It looks to transformation. It asks us to lift up our heads and acknowledge the risen Lord as our light and our salvation.

Operation Rice Bowl
Every now and then we get a glimpse of the Kingdom of Heaven, as the apostles did when they saw Jesus talking with Moses and Elijah, the lawgiver and the prophet. We finally understand what scripture and the Church have been telling us about God's desire, God's way. This glimpse of the Kingdom of Heaven can happen when we place our feet in the shoes of our brothers and sisters who struggle with hunger and poverty, and see life from their perspectives.
Catholic Relief Serves has been helping the people of Pakistan through education programs that focus on improving the social and economic situation of the most vulnerable members of the community, often women, as the key to addressing malnutrition and high mortality rates. Please support CRS' education projects with your prayers, fasting, learning and giving with Operation Rice Bowl this week. Visit www.crs.org/orb to learn more.

A Family Perspective
It's easy to sleep-walk through a day, going from one task to another. Today's gospel says the apostles recognized God's presence only when they were “totally awake.” This Lent spend a few minutes each day “fully awake”, appreciating God's presence in your family. Like the apostles you will say: “It si good for us to be here.”

ON BEFRIENDING DARKNESS
Today's Transfiguration and covenant stories encompass experiences of both light and darkness. The trio of Peter and James and John, as well as Abram long before them, found their experience of darkness to be more than a bit unsettling. The Gospel says Peter and his friends were frightened, and the book of Genesis says Abram was terrified. Nevertheless, these events became turning points for a new way of understanding what their lives were to be about.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
INSIDE THE READINGS
After telling the disciples that he will suffer and be killed, Jesus adds "and on the third day be raised" (Luke 9:22). The Transfiguration gives a preview of the glory of that resurrection.
Jesus is transfigured before Peter, James, and John. "His face changed in appearance and his clothing became dazzling white" (9:29). Moses and Elijah appear with him representing the Old Testament. Suddenly they are overshadowed by a cloud, the sign of God's presence. From the cloud the heavenly voice says, "This is my chosen Son; listen to him" (9:35). Jesus is then left alone—he alone now will be the spokesperson for his Father. All must listen to Jesus.
The Transfiguration story also appears in Matthew and Mark, but Luke offers some interesting additions. First of all, he notes that Jesus "went up the mountain to pray" (9:28). In the Gospel of Luke a mountain is seen as a place of prayer. Luke notes that Jesus often spends the entire evening on a mountain in prayer with the Father, especially before important decisions, such as the choice of the Twelve (6:12-16).
Perhaps the most important addition by Luke is the indication of what Jesus, Moses, and Elijah were discussing. They "spoke of his exodus that he was going to accomplish in Jerusalem" (9:31). Already in 9:51 Luke says of Jesus, "He resolutely determined to journey to Jerusalem." For Luke the exodus, the departure of Jesus, will include not only the death and Resurrection, but also the Ascension (24:50-53). The Transfiguration will support the faith of the disciples as they, too, will suffer and be killed. They will see the Resurrection as the ultimate goal.
THOUGHTS FOR ACTION
Not being able to see very clearly what's in store for us does not mean that we should back away from such darkness. Being frightened, even terrified, by an uncertain future does not suggest we're meant for some other path. To the contrary, it is in the midst of that clouded unknown that we meet the future to which our God is calling us.
